  • Trade-off: IRSC lists no internship, no named software, no embedded certification, and no construction transfer agreement. The 6 elective credits must come from a green-building and energy list.

A.S. in Building Construction Technology

The estimated tuition for the A.S. in Building Construction Technology at Indian River State College is approximately $6,229.80 (60 credits at $103.83/credit).

The program can generally be completed in about 2 years (4 semesters) of full-time study.

Official program: Associate in Science in Building Construction Technology. Duration is derived from 60 credits at 15 credits per semester; IRSC does not publish a program length.

A.S. Curriculum

The 60 credits split into 15 credits of general education, 39 required construction credits, and 6 elective credits.

  • Estimating and cost: BCT 2770 Construction Estimating, Foundation to Basic Structure; BCT 2772 Construction Estimating, Finishes and Systems; BCN 1721 Construction Accounting and Cost Control
  • Supervision and office: BCT 2705 Construction Supervision (critical path scheduling, job cost accounting, OSHA requirements, draw schedules); BCT 1700 Construction Office Practices
  • Codes: BCN 1765 Codes and Regulations; BCT 1760 Building Codes and Specifications
  • Plans reading: BCN 1272 Plans Interpretation, Residential; BCN 2275 Plans Interpretation, Commercial
  • Materials and systems: BCN 1214 and BCN 1215 Materials and Methods of Construction; BCN 2440 Concrete Construction Methods; BCT 1562 Plumbing and Electrical Systems
  • Electives (6 credits): two of Zero Energy Building Design and Construction, Residential Energy Fundamentals, Sustainable Building Systems, Green Building and Energy Efficiency, or Energy in Building Design
  • Math: one 3-credit course; IRSC recommends MGF 1130 Mathematical Thinking. College Algebra, statistics, and Calculus I are also allowed.
  • Science: one 3-credit course; IRSC recommends PHY 1053 College Physics I

Estimating is taught as a two-course sequence that follows the order of a real takeoff: structure first, then finishes and systems. Plans reading is split the same way, residential then commercial. The core contains no drafting, CAD, BIM, or surveying course. That keeps the degree aimed at estimator, assistant superintendent, and project coordinator roles rather than design support.

You Should Know
  • The recommended math course is Mathematical Thinking, not College Algebra. Students who may later pursue a construction bachelor’s degree should confirm which math the receiving program requires before choosing.
  • Choosing Calculus I (5 credits) instead of a 3-credit math course raises the degree to 62 credits.
  • IRSC’s program page lists city, county, state, and federal contracting as a learning area. No required course carries contracting in its title.
  • The energy electives are the only electives. Students cannot swap in safety, scheduling software, or additional management courses.

A.S. Internship and Field Experience

  • Internship: none listed in the degree requirements
  • Credits, hours, and paid status: not applicable
  • Placement support and employer partners: not clearly stated

Graduates leave without a supervised field placement on their transcript. Working tradespeople already on a jobsite lose little from this. Career changers and recent high school graduates should plan to find part-time construction work or a summer job on their own during the program.

A.S. Admissions

Admission is open, and the program offers several start points during the year.

  • IRSC is open-access: anyone with a high school diploma or equivalency is admitted
  • Application fee: $20 for associate degree applicants
  • No program-specific prerequisites, limited-access process, or portfolio are listed
  • Dual enrollment is available to local high school students

Tuition

Indian River State College publishes one combined per-credit cost for lower-level college credit: $103.83 for Florida residents and $390.49 for non-residents. IRSC does not separate tuition from mandatory fees on its tuition pages.

ItemIn-StateOut-of-State
Per-credit cost (lower level)$103.83$390.49
Credits6060
Estimated program total$6,229.80$23,429.40
Associate application fee$20$20
Distance learning fee (online courses only)$10/credit$10/credit

All 13 required construction courses are 1000- or 2000-level, so the lower-level rate applies to the full degree. The full fee schedule is in the IRSC catalog, and cost-of-attendance estimates are on IRSC’s estimated costs page.

Be aware that:

  • The $6,229.80 total assumes 60 credits; the Calculus I option adds 2 credits.
  • IRSC’s associate cost-of-attendance table lists $2,760 a year for tuition and fees. That figure does not match 30 credits at $103.83 ($3,114.90), and IRSC does not explain the gap.
  • Any course taken online adds $10 per credit. Lab or course fees for BCN and BCT courses are not clearly stated.
  • IRSC’s catalog labels its fee schedule as “in effect as of 2021 Fall Semester,” though it appears in the 2026-2027 catalog. Confirm current rates before budgeting.
  • IRSC’s Promise Program offers eligible high school graduates in its service district a tuition-free associate degree.

The true all-in cost for a Florida resident is roughly $6,250 before books, plus $10 per credit for any online sections. For students who qualify for the Promise Program, tuition may fall to zero.

Why Choose This Construction Management Program?

Best suited for Treasure Coast residents who want a low-cost, two-year path into estimating, field supervision, or a builder’s office, and who do not need an internship or design software on their transcript.

For tradespeople moving into the office: The estimating, cost control, codes, and supervision courses are the skills a carpenter or concrete lead needs to move into estimating or assistant superintendent work. Existing field experience covers the missing internship.

For recent high school graduates: The open admission and year-round starts make this an easy entry point, and Promise Program eligibility can remove tuition. The lack of a required internship means these students should line up construction work alongside classes.

For students aiming at a bachelor’s degree: IRSC publishes no construction articulation agreement, and the recommended math is below College Algebra. Students planning to transfer should choose math and science with the receiving program’s requirements in hand.

Accreditation and Credentials

Indian River State College is institutionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). That accreditation supports federal financial aid eligibility and transfer of credit between regionally accredited schools.

IRSC does not state programmatic accreditation for the A.S. in Building Construction Technology. The program does not appear on the American Council for Construction Education’s associate degree list (revision dated March 20, 2025). Most two-year construction programs are not ACCE-accredited, so this is not unusual at the associate level.

IRSC does not name embedded industry certifications, software training, or contractor-license credit for this degree. BCT 2705 covers OSHA requirements as course content, but no OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 card is listed as part of the program.
