Program Pathways Overview
| Program | Est. Tuition | Est. Duration | Credit Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| B.S. | $24.7K in-state / $87.4K out-of-state | 4 years (8 semesters) | 120 |
| M.S. (Campus) | $13.7K-$16.4K in-state / $34.4K-$41.3K out-of-state | 1 to 2 years (3 to 6 semesters) | 30-36 |
| M.S. (Online) | $14.6K-$17.5K in-state / $35.3K-$42.3K out-of-state | 1 to 2 years (3 to 6 semesters) | 30-36 |
Tuition estimates use FIU’s Fall 2026 per-credit tuition plus mandatory per-credit fees; online figures add FIU’s $30/credit distance learning fee.
- Why choose it: The B.S. requires The Legal Environment of Business and Legal Aspects of Construction, and the M.S. can be earned jointly with an FIU J.D., with 9 credits counting toward both. Undergraduates with a 3.2 GPA can finish the B.S. and M.S. in about five years.
- Trade-off: For students who already hold a CM degree, the M.S. has no fixed core; all 30 credits are electives chosen with an advisor. Students who want a defined curriculum should ask for a sample plan of study before applying.

B.S. in Construction Management
The estimated tuition for the Bachelor of Science in Construction Management at Florida International University is approximately $24,668 (120 credits at $205.57/credit).
The program can generally be completed in about 4 years (8 semesters).
B.S. Curriculum
The degree requires at least 24 lower-division and 60 upper-division credits. The upper division is 16 required construction courses plus Introduction to Management (51 credits) and 9 elective credits at the 3000-4000 level.
- Math and science: Pre-Calculus (MAC 1147) or Trigonometry, Physics without Calculus with lab, Statistics
- Business and law: Microeconomics, Accounting for Managers, The Legal Environment of Business, Introduction to Management
- Construction management: Principles of CM, Management of Construction Projects, Financial Management of Construction Organizations, Legal Aspects of Construction
- Estimating and scheduling: two-course sequences in each (Estimating I and II, Scheduling I and II)
- Structures: Structural Design I and II, plus Temporary Structures in Construction
- Technical and systems: Materials and Methods, Surveying, Sitework and Equipment, Environmental Control in Buildings, Building Codes and Quality Control
- Documents and drawing: Plans Interpretation, Building Drawing, Construction Documentation and Communication
- Capstone: Senior Project, open only after Legal Environment of Business and all core BCN courses except Financial Management
- Electives: options include Building Information Modeling, Sustainable Approach to Construction, Quality Control, Concrete Industry, and the internship
The balance leans toward management and cost control: four estimating and scheduling courses, four management and finance courses, and two law courses. The structures block is heavier than at business-based CM programs, with three structural courses resting on non-calculus physics. Calculus is optional, since Pre-Calculus satisfies the math requirement. BIM appears only as an elective. More curriculum details are available here.
You Should Know
- Students must pass MAC 1147 within three academic terms, not counting summers, or be advised into another major.
- Every required and elective course needs a C or better, including transfer courses.
- FIU does not award credit for work experience and rarely grants credit by exam.
- The catalog and the department flowchart describe the 9 upper-level elective credits differently: the catalog allows up to 3 business credits, the flowchart lists BCN courses only.
B.S. Internship and Field Experience
- BCN 3949 CM Industry Internship is an elective, not a requirement.
- Requires department consent; graded pass/fail. Credits and hours not clearly stated.
- Placement: the school circulates employer postings by email. Paid status not clearly stated.
- Program pages name site visits, a Trimble lab, and an annual Career Expo.
Because the internship is optional, students can graduate without field experience. South Florida’s contractor market offers plenty of internship options, but students should plan one by junior year rather than rely on the senior project alone for job-ready experience.
B.S. Admissions
Freshmen apply through standard FIU admission; the Pre-Calculus deadline after enrollment is the main program-specific hurdle.
- Freshmen: high school diploma, SAT, ACT, or CLT scores, and transcripts.
- Transfers: a Florida public A.A. satisfies FIU’s core; equivalent 1000/2000-level courses under statewide numbering are accepted.
- Transfer credit beyond 60 community college hours does not reduce upper-division requirements.
- Accelerated B.S./M.S.: 75 credits, 3.2 GPA, all lower-division courses done, and advisor recommendation; apply before the last 30 credits.
M.S. in Construction Management
The estimated tuition for the Master of Science in Construction Management at Florida International University is approximately $13,669 (30 credits at $455.64/credit) for students with a CM bachelor’s, rising to $16,403 at 36 credits.
The program can generally be completed in about 1 to 2 years.
The online version uses the same curriculum and faculty. With the $30/credit distance learning fee, it costs about $14,569 to $17,483 in-state (derived).
M.S. Curriculum
Required credits depend on the applicant’s bachelor’s degree:
- 30 credits: B.S. in construction management, construction science, or construction engineering. No foundation courses allowed.
- 33 credits: engineering or architecture degree. At least 9 foundation credits.
- 36 credits: business and other degrees. At least 12 foundation credits.
- Foundation courses: Fundamentals of Construction Estimating, Construction Economic Analysis, Principles of Construction Scheduling, Codes and Regulations, Construction Legal Environment.
- Electives: any graduate BCN course; department pages list examples such as Construction Cost Analysis and Control, Construction Safety Management, Construction Financial Management, and Management of Construction Organizations.
- Thesis option: 6 thesis credits plus coursework, with an oral defense.
- Non-thesis option: all coursework, up to 6 credits of independent study.
For CM graduates the degree is entirely elective, which suits professionals who want to target risk, finance, or safety. Career changers spend 9 to 12 credits on foundations that cover undergraduate-level estimating, scheduling, and law. More curriculum details are available here.
You Should Know
- The M.S./J.D. joint pathway lets 9 law credits replace three M.S. electives, and 9 M.S. credits count toward the J.D. Applicants must be admitted to both colleges and cannot already hold either degree.
- FIU’s program page and catalog describe the thesis track differently: 30 coursework credits plus 6 thesis (program page) vs. 24-30 plus 6 (catalog).
- A self-paced online Short Course can replace prerequisite coursework for applicants without a construction, engineering, or architecture degree. Its cost, and whether it reduces the 33 or 36 credit requirement, are not clearly stated.
- The on-campus program runs on weeknights. The online program offers two to three courses per semester, which can stretch completion for full-time students.
M.S. Internship and Field Experience
The M.S. has no required internship. The catalog lists BCN 5949 as countable once toward graduation but does not describe it. The program is built for working professionals, so field experience typically comes from the student’s current job.
M.S. Admissions
Admission is open to non-construction graduates, but they carry 3 to 6 extra credits.
- Bachelor’s in construction, engineering, architecture, business, or a related field.
- Minimum 3.0 GPA in upper-division coursework; lower GPAs may be considered with GRE/GMAT, references, or work experience, under conditional admission.
- No GRE required at 3.0 or higher.
- Transcripts and resume; statement of purpose and letters optional.
- International applicants: TOEFL 80 (iBT) or IELTS 6.5. The campus M.S. is STEM-designated for OPT; the online M.S. cannot be used for an I-20.
Tuition
FIU charges $205.57 per undergraduate credit and $455.64 per graduate credit for Florida residents in Fall 2026. Out-of-state students pay $728.38 and $1,146.38. See FIU’s cost estimate page.
| Per-Credit Charge | Undergraduate | Graduate |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | $105.07 | $379.95 |
| Tuition Differential | $52.29 | None |
| Financial Aid | $5.25 | $18.99 |
| Capital Improvement | $6.76 | $6.76 |
| Activity and Service | $14.45 | $14.45 |
| Athletic | $16.50 | $16.50 |
| Technology | $5.25 | $18.99 |
| In-State Total | $205.57 | $455.64 |
| Out-of-State Fees | +$522.81 | +$690.74 |
| Out-of-State Total | $728.38 | $1,146.38 |
- B.S.: $24,668 in-state; $87,406 out-of-state (120 credits).
- M.S. on campus: $13,669-$16,403 in-state; $34,391-$41,270 out-of-state.
- M.S. online: $14,569-$17,483 in-state; $35,291-$42,350 out-of-state (derived).
Be aware that:
- Per-semester health ($93.69) and athletic ($10) fees add about $104 per term. FIU’s cost estimate lists $199 per term for campus students, so campus fees run higher; the extra charge is not itemized.
- Over 8 semesters, those flat fees add roughly $830-$1,590 to the B.S.
- ⚠️ FIU’s M.S. program page lists $1,056.29 per credit out-of-state; FIU’s Fall 2026 fee regulation and cost estimate both use $1,146.38. This page uses $1,146.38.
- The online rate is derived from FIU’s cost estimate, which adds $30 per credit. The program page does not publish a separate online CM rate.
- The accelerated B.S./M.S. saves about $1,850 in-state versus taking both degrees separately (derived: 9 graduate credits replace 9 undergraduate electives).
- Undergraduates who exceed 120% of required credits pay an excess-hour surcharge.
At public rates, FIU’s M.S. costs a fraction of private alternatives in Miami. The B.S. is priced like other Florida public universities, and transfer students can lower the total by finishing lower-division prerequisites at a state college first.
Why Choose This Construction Management Program?
FIU works best for students who see contracts, claims, and construction law as part of the job rather than a side topic.
Law and management depth. The B.S. carries two law courses and a finance course, and the M.S./J.D. joint pathway is a direct route into construction law. That fits students aiming at owner’s-rep, contracts, or dispute-resolution roles.
Flexible graduate access. No GRE at a 3.0 GPA, weeknight or online delivery, and a Short Course for non-construction graduates make the M.S. accessible to working professionals. Within Miami, FIU’s in-state M.S. tuition of about $13,700 compares with roughly $82,900 for the 30-credit M.S. at the University of Miami, a private school with more delivery formats and an executive track.
Where it falls short. The B.S. internship is optional and BIM is an elective, so students must seek out field and software experience. The M.S. is not ACCE-accredited, which matters little for most employers but is worth knowing.
Accreditation and Credentials
Florida International University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associate through doctoral degrees. Institutional accreditation supports federal financial aid eligibility and credit transfer. See FIU’s accreditation page.
The B.S. is accredited by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) and appears on ACCE’s baccalaureate list (Rev. 2024.03.13). FIU describes the Moss School as ACCE-accredited, but the M.S. does not appear on ACCE’s master’s list (Rev. 2025.03.20). Few master’s programs hold ACCE accreditation.
Neither degree embeds an industry certification. The department offers free construction safety training on Thursdays and Saturdays at the Engineering Center, open to students and the public. FIU does not state Florida contractor-licensing or AIC exam relevance for either degree.
