Tuition estimates use Broward College’s current on-campus per-credit tuition plus mandatory fees.

Broward College runs its construction courses in the evening, starting at 6 p.m. on weekdays at the Willis Holcombe Center in downtown Fort Lauderdale, so students can keep a full-time job. Up to 12 of the A.S. degree’s 21 courses can be taken online, including all general education. Apprentices who completed a qualifying Florida Department of Education apprenticeship enter a separate A.S. with 27 credits already awarded, leaving 33 credits to pay for.

The trade-off is depth. The apprentice A.S. includes only 12 credits of construction coursework, against 42 in the Building Construction Technology A.S. Advanced construction courses run once a year in fall or spring, so a missed course can add a full year. None of the three credentials is ACCE-accredited, and no internship is required.

Building Construction Technology Specialist Certificate

The estimated tuition for the Building Construction Technology Specialist Certificate at Broward College is approximately $2,122.20 (18 credits at $117.90/credit).

The program can generally be completed in about one semester (16 weeks).

Building Construction Technology Specialist, Technical Certificate (6315)

Certificate Curriculum

All 7 courses are construction courses, and all 7 are also required in the Building Construction Technology A.S. The certificate stacks fully into that degree.

  • BCN 1210C Construction Materials (4 credits)
  • BCN 1272 Building Construction Plans Interpretation (2)
  • BCN 2560 Mechanical and Electrical Systems (3)
  • BCT 2040 MEP Plans Interpretation (2)
  • BCT 1706 Construction Documents (2)
  • BCT 1770 Construction Estimating (2)
  • BCN 2721C Construction Management (3)

The mix leans toward reading plans and systems: four courses cover materials, plans and MEP, while estimating, documents and construction management cover the business side. Broward lists 5 of the 7 courses as fully online and 2 as in-person. More curriculum details are available here.

Certificate Internship and Field Experience

  • No internship or field experience is part of the certificate.

The certificate is a classroom credential. Its value on the job comes from plan-reading and estimating skills, not supervised site hours.

Certificate Admissions

Admission is open, with no construction prerequisites.

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Certificate courses are offered twice a year
You Should Know
  • Eighteen credits in 16 weeks is a full-time load. Working students should expect to stretch it across more than one semester.
  • Broward does not say which 2 courses must be taken in person.

Building Construction Technology A.S.

The estimated tuition for the Building Construction Technology A.S. at Broward College is approximately $7,074.00 (60 credits at $117.90/credit).

The program can generally be completed in about 2 years.

Building Construction Technology, Associate of Science (2184)

A.S. Curriculum

The degree has 15 construction courses (42 credits) and 6 general education courses (18 credits). Management and business subjects carry most of the construction block.

  • Management and business: BCN 2721C Construction Management, BCT 1743 Building Construction Law, BCN 1757C Construction Accounting, BCT 2710 Infrastructure Coordination (permits and agencies)
  • Estimating and scheduling: BCT 1770 Construction Estimating, BCT 2771 Advanced Estimating (commercial bids), BCT 2720C Construction Scheduling (CPM and PERT)
  • Codes and safety: BCT 2760 Building Codes and Regulations (Florida Building Code), BCT 1767C OSHA Standards (OSHA 30 card)
  • Documents and plans: BCT 1706 Construction Documents, BCN 1272 Plans Interpretation, BCT 2040 MEP Plans Interpretation
  • Technical and systems: BCN 1210C Construction Materials, BCN 2560 Mechanical and Electrical Systems, BCN 2253C Building Construction Drawing (2-D CAD and basic surveying)
  • General education: Composition I, a general education math course, natural science, speech, humanities, and U.S. history or national government

The math requirement is any course from Broward’s general education math core; no specific course is named. Students planning a later B.S. in construction management should take College Algebra or higher. The curriculum tracks the subjects a Florida contractor needs: law, accounting, codes and estimating are all required. More curriculum details are available here.

A.S. Internship and Field Experience

  • No internship is required.
  • Broward directs students to Employment Solutions for internship listings after their first year.
  • A virtual job shadow tool is available.
  • Paid status, hours and employer partners: not clearly stated.

Because classes run in the evening, the program assumes many students already work in construction during the day. Career changers without that work should find an internship on their own.

A.S. Admissions

Admission is open.

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Construction courses begin in fall or spring; general education runs year-round
  • Credit for prior learning: credit by exam, industry certifications, prior learning assessment
You Should Know
  • Nine of the 21 courses must be taken in person at the downtown center.
  • Most advanced construction courses are offered once a year. Check prerequisites early; Construction Scheduling, Advanced Estimating, Construction Accounting and Building Construction Drawing each have one.
  • Broward says the A.S. counts toward part of the eligibility requirements for the Florida Contractor’s License exam but does not say how much credit it earns.

Applied Technology Management A.S. (Construction)

The estimated tuition for the Applied Technology Management A.S. (Construction) at Broward College is approximately $3,890.70 (33 billed credits at $117.90/credit).

The program can generally be completed in about 1 year.

Applied Technology Management, Associate of Science, Construction (2194B)

Apprentice A.S. Curriculum

Twenty-seven of the 60 credits come from MNA 1949 Industry Work Experience, awarded for a completed apprenticeship or technical college program. The remaining 33 credits are taken at Broward.

  • BCT 1770 Construction Estimating (2 credits)
  • BCT 1706 Construction Documents (2)
  • BCN 1272 Building Construction Plans Interpretation (2)
  • BCT 2720C Construction Scheduling (3)
  • BCT 2760 Building Codes and Regulations (3)
  • CGS 1060C Computer and Internet Literacy (3), or an approved elective for students who test out
  • General education: Composition I, speech, math, natural science, humanities, U.S. history or national government (18)

Only 12 credits are construction management coursework. Law, accounting, advanced estimating and OSHA are not included. More curriculum details are available here.

Apprentice A.S. Internship and Field Experience

  • No internship is required.
  • The completed apprenticeship stands in for field experience through the 27 articulated credits.

Students enter with trade experience already documented, so the degree adds estimating, scheduling and codes on top of field skills.

Apprentice A.S. Admissions

This is a limited-access program.

  • Requires a completed FLDOE registered apprenticeship or technical college career certificate on Broward’s approved list
  • Credits are awarded once the student submits proof of completion
  • Approved construction programs include carpentry, electrician, plumbing, roofing, glazing, structural steel and heavy equipment operation, several available at Atlantic Technical College
  • Articulation list dated as of June 29, 2025
You Should Know
  • Broward’s approved list also maps non-construction programs, such as culinary and medical assisting, to this construction track. A student from those fields would earn the degree with only 12 construction credits.
  • Broward’s one-year timeline assumes about 16.5 credits per fall and spring term. That is a full-time load for working apprentices.
  • Which courses can be taken online is not clearly stated.
  • The catalog lists Florida Certified Residential Contractor’s License exam eligibility for this degree, but the program page ties license credit to the Building Construction Technology A.S. (2184) only.

  • Building Construction Technology A.S.: 60 × $117.90 = $7,074.00 in-state; 60 × $373.00 = $22,380.00 out-of-state
  • Apprentice A.S.: 33 × $117.90 = $3,890.70 in-state; 33 × $373.00 = $12,309.00 out-of-state

Be aware that:

  • Lab fees apply to three A.S. courses: $8 (Construction Materials), $120 (Building Construction Drawing) and $19 (OSHA Standards), for $147 total. The certificate includes only the $8 fee.
  • Online courses cost $5 more per credit for in-state students. Taking all 18 general education credits online adds about $90.
  • Online courses cost $129.60 less per credit for out-of-state students. Taking all 18 general education credits online saves about $2,332.80.
  • Broward values the 27 articulated apprentice credits at $3,183.30 in savings and describes them as free.
  • Courses attempted three or more times are billed at $245.17 per credit in-state.
  • Books, tools and PPE costs are not clearly stated.

All-in, the Building Construction Technology A.S. costs about $7,221 in-state with lab fees. Out-of-state students gain the most from online sections. Apprentices pay roughly half the A.S. price, but for a degree with about a third of the construction content.

Why Choose This Construction Management Program?

Best suited for South Florida construction workers who need evening classes and want a degree tied to Florida contractor licensing. The right Broward pathway depends on where you start.

Already finished an apprenticeship: The Applied Technology Management A.S. is the fastest and cheapest degree, at 33 billed credits. It covers estimating, scheduling, documents and codes, but not law, accounting or OSHA. Apprentices who want those subjects can take the Building Construction Technology A.S. instead.

Working in the trades without an apprenticeship credential: Start with the certificate. All 18 credits move into the Building Construction Technology A.S., which adds law, accounting, advanced estimating and the OSHA 30 card. Broward says the A.S. counts toward Florida contractor-license eligibility. Northwest Florida State College states a specific credit (two years of field experience for its certificate), while Broward does not quantify its credit.

Planning a construction bachelor’s: Broward’s in-house B.A.S. is a general business degree in Supervision and Management, with project management as one of five specializations. It is not a construction management B.S. Students aiming for an ACCE-accredited associate degree can compare Santa Fe College, whose A.S. is on ACCE’s list.

Accreditation and Credentials

Broward College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associate and bachelor’s degrees. Regional accreditation supports credit transfer to other institutions and eligibility for federal financial aid. All three pathways are financial-aid eligible and listed on the CareerSource Broward ITA list.

No programmatic accreditation is listed. Broward does not appear on ACCE’s associate-degree list (March 2025 revision). Most two-year construction programs are not ACCE-accredited, so this is common at the associate level.

The credentials carry practical weight. The OSHA Standards course ends with an OSHA 30 Construction Industry card. The Construction Documents course is designed to prepare students for the Construction Specifications Institute’s Construction Documents Technologist (CDT) exam. Broward states that the Building Construction Technology A.S. counts toward part of the eligibility requirements for the Florida Contractor’s License exam, and the catalog lists eligibility for the Florida Certified Residential Contractor’s License exam.
