- Building Construction Specialist Certificate
Program Pathways Overview
| Program | Est. Tuition | Est. Duration | Credit Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| BCM A.S. | $6.0K in-state / $23.2K out-of-state | 2 years (4 semesters) | 60 |
| CMT A.S. | $6.0K in-state / $23.2K out-of-state | 2 years (4 semesters) | 60 |
| Certificate | $1.8K in-state / $7.0K out-of-state | 1 year (2 semesters) | 18 |
Tuition estimates use Tallahassee State College’s current per-credit tuition plus mandatory fees.
- Why choose it: Tallahassee State College runs two 60-credit A.S. degrees that share 18 credits of core coursework, then split. Building Construction Management leans toward engineering and drafting; Construction Management Technology leans toward field methods and trades, and ends in a 4-credit capstone. Both cost the same.
- Trade-off: Neither degree requires an internship, and both are campus programs outside TSC’s online lineup. The certificate stacks fully into only one of the two degrees, so students should pick a track before taking certificate courses.

A.S. in Building Construction Management
The estimated tuition for the A.S. in Building Construction Management at Tallahassee State College is approximately $6,050 (60 credits at $100.83/credit).
The program can generally be completed in about 2 years (4 semesters) of full-time study.
Official program: Building Construction Management, A.S. (2160).
Building Construction Management Curriculum
The 60 credits split into 15 credits of general education and 15 program courses of 3 credits each.
- General education (15): ENC 1101, MAC 1105 College Algebra, and one state core course each in humanities, natural science, and social science
- Management and estimating (15): Construction Management, Construction Estimating 1, Construction Operations, Construction Contracts, Codes, Laws and Safety, and Introduction to Management or an internship
- Engineering and drafting (18): Applied Math Concepts for Design and Construction, Statics and Strength of Materials, Engineering Graphics, Introduction to Engineering Technology, Introduction to CAD, Fundamentals of Land Surveying
- Materials and sustainability (6): Construction Materials and Methods, Introduction to Sustainable/Green Building Principles
- Other (6): Computer and Internet Literacy (exemption exam available), Industrial Safety
This is the more technical of the two degrees. Six courses (18 credits) cover engineering, drafting, and surveying, against five management courses (15 credits). Statics and Strength of Materials and a CAD course give students a base for estimating structural work and reading design drawings. Industrial Safety comes from TSC’s manufacturing side rather than a construction-specific OSHA course.

You Should Know
- Students choose between MAN 2021 Introduction to Management and IDS 2941 Technology and Professional Programs Internship. Picking the internship drops the general management course.
- TSC lists Building Construction Management among the programs its Innovation Hub supports, with tracks in 3D printing, laser fabrication, and robotics. These are add-ons, not degree requirements.
- Grades of C or higher are required in any communications, humanities, social science, or math course used for general education.
Building Construction Management Internship and Field Experience
- Required: no; IDS 2941 is one of two options for a 3-credit slot
- Hours: not clearly stated
- Paid status: not clearly stated
- Placement support and employer partners: not clearly stated
Because the internship is optional, students should plan for it early if they want jobsite experience on their resume. Without it, the degree has no built-in field component beyond the surveying lab.
Building Construction Management Admissions
Tallahassee State College has open admission. College Algebra readiness is the main academic hurdle.
- Apply to TSC and declare program 2160
- Placement scores (PERT, SAT, ACT, or equivalent) determine whether students start in MAC 1105 or a lower math course
- High school dual enrollment students pay no tuition or lab fees
You Should Know
- Under TSC’s 2025-2026 career pathway agreements, Gadsden Technical College Carpentry completers and Wakulla County Building Trades and Construction completers earn 3 credits for BCN 2230 Construction Materials and Methods, tuition-free.
- To qualify, students need a 2.5 GPA in the articulated program and must enroll within 18 months. The credit posts only after 9 credits are completed in the A.S.

- Management and estimating (16): Construction Management, Construction Management II, Construction Estimating 1, Construction Contracts, Codes, Laws and Safety, Construction Capstone (4)
- Field methods and trades (17): Construction Field Technology, Construction Techniques I and II (4 each), Construction Materials and Methods, Related Specialty Trades
- Drawings and layout (12): Applied Math Concepts for Design and Construction, Blueprint Reading, Engineering Graphics, Construction Surveying
This degree trades the engineering courses for hands-on field work. It adds a second management course and a capstone, and drops statics, CAD, and the computer literacy course. Every program course is construction-specific, with no manufacturing or general technology crossovers.
More curriculum details are available here.
You Should Know
- Five courses carry a “C” lecture/lab suffix: Construction Techniques I and II, Construction Capstone, Engineering Graphics, and Construction Surveying. Expect in-person lab time.
- TSC’s program page for this degree lists no related certificate, and the catalog contact email still uses the old tcc.fl.edu domain. Confirm details with the Applied Sciences and Technology office at (850) 201-8352.
Construction Management Technology Internship and Field Experience
- Required internship: none
- Capstone: BCN 2952C Construction Capstone, 4 credits
- Paid status, hours, and employer partners: not clearly stated
The capstone and two construction techniques labs give this track more required hands-on work than Building Construction Management. Students still need to find outside employment for real jobsite references.
Construction Management Technology Admissions
Admission requirements match Building Construction Management: open admission with College Algebra placement.
- Apply to TSC and declare program 2183
- The 3 articulated credits for BCN 2230 from Gadsden Technical College or Wakulla County programs also apply here, since the course is in both degrees

Why Choose This Construction Management Program?
Best suited for Big Bend students who want a low-cost campus A.S. and already know whether they lean toward design offices or jobsites.
Choose Building Construction Management for estimating, inspection, or project engineering roles that depend on drawings and structural basics. It includes statics, CAD, and land surveying, accepts the full certificate, and lets students swap a management course for an internship.
Choose Construction Management Technology for superintendent and field supervisor roles. Two construction techniques labs, specialty trades, a second management course, and a 4-credit capstone put more weight on how buildings go together and how crews are run.
Who should look elsewhere. Students set on a construction bachelor’s should note that TSC names no transfer agreement for either A.S. Santa Fe College spells out an A.A. route into UF’s Rinker School. Students who need online classes will find more flexibility at Lake-Sumter State College.
Accreditation and Credentials
Tallahassee State College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associate and baccalaureate degrees. Institutional accreditation keeps students eligible for federal financial aid and lets other schools evaluate credits for transfer. See TSC’s accreditation page.
TSC lists no programmatic accreditation for its construction programs from the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) or ABET’s Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission. TSC does not appear on ACCE’s associate degree list (Rev. 2025.03.20). Most two-year construction programs are not ACCE-accredited, so this is normal at this level.
Neither degree embeds an industry certification. TSC does not state any Florida contractor-licensing or AIC Associate Constructor exam relevance for these programs.
