Building Construction Management A.A.S.

The estimated tuition for the Building Construction Management A.A.S. at Ivy Tech Community College is approximately $10,703 in-state or $20,938 out-of-state (60 credits at $178.38 or $348.97/credit).

The program can generally be completed in about 2 to 2.5 years (4 to 5 semesters); Ivy Tech lists 5 semesters, and its graduates averaged 2.3 years over five years.

The A.A.S. is Ivy Tech’s career-ready degree, built for students going straight to work.

A.A.S. Curriculum

The 60 credits split into 16 general education credits, a 25-credit technical core, a 3-credit capstone, 15 elective credits, and a 1-credit student success course.

  • Technical core (8 courses): Construction Graphics and Print Reading, Construction Estimating, Construction Materials, Concrete and Soils (4 credits), Introduction to Building Construction Management, Codes and Specifications, Survey and Measurement, and Intro to Statics and Strength of Materials.
  • Capstone: BCOM 220 Project Planning and Control.
  • Electives (15 credits): from accounting, business, management, organizational leadership, building construction technology, design, HVAC, industrial technology, or welding courses.
  • Math and science: MATH 122 Applied Technical Mathematics (or higher) and a 4-credit lab science.
  • General education: Workplace Communication, English Composition, and a humanities or social science elective.

The core mixes management (estimating, codes, planning and control) with technical subjects (concrete and soils, surveying, statics). The 15 elective credits let a student lean toward trades, HVAC, or business management. The math stops at applied technical math, which is enough for estimating work but not for most bachelor’s programs.

You Should Know
  • Ivy Tech’s program page lists 43 program-specific credits for the A.A.S.; that figure combines the technical core, capstone, and electives.
  • The A.A.S. general education core is not the full Indiana College Core, so students planning a bachelor’s should consider the A.S.

A.A.S. Internship and Field Experience

  • Requirement: none in the degree; Ivy Tech says the program “offers internships.”
  • Applied courses: Survey and Measurement, Concrete and Soils, and the capstone.
  • Outcomes: in a 2022-2025 survey of 2,497 graduates across Ivy Tech’s accreditation-seeking programs, 84% said the program helped them get or advance in a job; the figure is not construction-specific.

Without a required internship, field experience depends on the student. Students already working in construction get it on the job; a student without a construction job should ask the campus about the internship option.

A.A.S. Admissions

  • Admission: open admission, as at Ivy Tech generally.
  • Locations: Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Lake County, and South Bend/Elkhart; no online version.
  • Accelerated: the ASAP format runs about 11 months at select locations.

Building Construction Management A.S.

The estimated tuition for the Building Construction Management A.S. at Ivy Tech Community College is approximately $10,703 in-state or $20,938 out-of-state (60 credits at $178.38 or $348.97/credit).

The program can generally be completed in about 2 to 2.5 years (4 to 5 semesters); Ivy Tech’s graduates averaged 2.5 years over five years.

The A.S. is the transfer degree, and it is the version available statewide through distance education.

A.S. Curriculum

The 60 credits split into the 32-credit Indiana College Core (STEM track), a 24-credit technical core, a 3-credit capstone, and a 1-credit student success course.

  • Math and science: College Algebra, Trigonometry with Analytic Geometry, Physics I, and Physics II.
  • Technical core (8 courses): Construction Materials, Introduction to Building Construction Management, Codes and Specifications, Intro to Statics and Strength of Materials, Construction Graphics and Print Reading, Construction Estimating, Survey and Measurement, and Safety and Risk Management (or a transfer cluster elective).
  • Capstone: BCOM 220 Project Planning and Control.
  • General education: English Composition, Public Speaking, a social and behavioral elective, and a humanistic and artistic elective.

The A.S. trades the A.A.S.’s 15 open electives and Concrete and Soils for algebra, trigonometry, and a full year of physics. That math and science base lines up with bachelor’s programs that require trigonometry and physics, such as Purdue Northwest’s engineering technology B.S. or Purdue’s B.S.

More curriculum details are available here.

You Should Know
  • The A.S. includes the Indiana College Core, a general education block designed to transfer among Indiana public institutions; how construction courses transfer depends on the receiving school.
  • Ivy Tech’s program page lists the A.S. at Fort Wayne, but the catalog lists only Indianapolis, Lake County, and South Bend/Elkhart plus distance education.

A.S. Internship and Field Experience

  • Requirement: none; the capstone is the applied project.
  • Online students: no on-site requirement is stated for the distance version.

The A.S. is built for transfer, not job placement, so students who want field experience before a bachelor’s should add summer construction work on their own.

A.S. Admissions

  • Admission: open admission.
  • Math placement: College Algebra is the entry point; students who place lower will need developmental math first.
  • Transfer: Ivy Tech cites “several four-year transfer partnerships” but does not name them on the program page; it directs students to a transfer advocate. Purdue Global publishes an example of an Ivy Tech graduate transferring 94 of 180 quarter credits.

Tuition

Indiana residents pay $178.38 per credit and out-of-state students pay $348.97, under a rate Ivy Tech has frozen from fall 2025 through summer 2027. Full-time students taking 12 or more credits pay a flat $2,577.11 (in-state) or $4,967.51 (out-of-state) per semester. See Ivy Tech’s tuition page.

ChargeIndiana ResidentOut-of-State
Tuition per credit$178.38$348.97
Full-time flat rate per semester (12+ credits)$2,577.11$4,967.51
A.A.S. or A.S. total (60 credits)$10,703$20,938

Be aware that:

  • Ivy+ textbook students pay $18 per credit, about $1,080 over 60 credits.
  • Course consumable fees vary by course and are not in the total.
  • Four full-time semesters at the flat rate would cost about $10,308 in-state; a five-semester plan at the flat rate costs about $12,886.
  • The workforce certification courses cost extra if taken outside the degree: OSHA 30 ($457), ICC General Contractor ($564), and ACI Concrete Field Testing ($798), per Ivy Tech.

At about $10,700, either Ivy Tech degree costs about $3,500 less than Vincennes’s Construction Technology A.S. ($14,252). Ivy Tech does not offer Vincennes’s neighbor-state discount, so an Illinois or Ohio student pays about $20,900 here.

Why Choose This Construction Management Program?

Best suited for Indiana students who want a low-cost start in construction management close to home or online, with a choice between working right away and transferring.

A.A.S. or A.S. Choose the A.A.S. to go to work: it adds concrete and soils and 15 elective credits in trades or business. Choose the A.S. to continue to a bachelor’s: it carries the Indiana College Core, trigonometry, and physics, and it is the only Ivy Tech version available online.

Compared with Vincennes. Vincennes’s A.S. is built around hands-on trades labs (framing, carpentry, electrical) and feeds its own online B.S. Ivy Tech’s degrees are management-focused, offered at four campuses, and cost less in-state. Vincennes is the better price for students from Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, or Ohio.

Accreditation and Credentials

Ivy Tech Community College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, which supports credit transfer and federal financial aid eligibility.

The Building Construction Management program is accredited by the Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE), per Ivy Tech. Ivy Tech does not appear on ACCE’s associate degree list (Rev. 2024.03.13), which includes no Indiana programs.

Ivy Tech offers credit courses tied to OSHA 30-Hour, ICC General Contractor, and ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I certifications, and lists OSHA 10-Hour training as part of the program. It does not state that the degrees count toward Indiana contractor licensing.
