- B.S. in Construction Management
Program Pathways Overview
| Program | Est. Tuition | Est. Duration | Credit Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| B.S. | $42.2K in-state / $77.2K out-of-state | 4 years (8 semesters) | 128 |
Tuition estimates use Alabama A&M’s Fall 2026 full-time flat rate (tuition plus mandatory fees) for eight semesters.
Alabama A&M’s B.S. in Construction Management runs a six-course engineering sequence through a business-heavy degree: statics, strength of materials, materials testing, soil mechanics, surveying, and concrete, steel and wood design. Every student also completes a 12-week industry internship and a two-semester capstone presented to faculty and industry professionals. Alabama community college students can follow a statewide AGSC/STARS transfer guide that names seven construction and engineering courses for the major.
The trade-off is accreditation. Alabama A&M’s bulletin names no programmatic accreditor for the CM degree, and the program does not appear on ACCE’s baccalaureate list. Auburn and Tuskegee, the two Alabama schools on that list, are the comparison to make before committing.

B.S. in Construction Management
The estimated tuition for the Bachelor of Science in Construction Management at Alabama A&M University is approximately $42,208 in-state (8 semesters at the $5,276 full-time flat rate).
The program can generally be completed in about 4 years (8 semesters) following the published four-year plan.
B.S. Curriculum
The degree totals 128 credits with a C or better required in every major course. Course mix by type:
- Engineering and site: CMG 201 Construction Surveying, CMG 217 Statics & Structural Analysis, CMG 218 Strength of Materials, CMG 301 Materials & Testing (ASTM standards), CMG 308 Soil Mechanics & Foundations, CMG 410 Concrete/Steel/Wood Design & Construction
- Methods and systems: CMG 105 Construction Materials, CMG 110 Blueprint Reading, CMG 300 Construction Methods, CMG 315 Heavy Construction (highways, bridges, dams, tunnels), CMG 318 Mechanical & Electrical Systems
- Estimating, scheduling and cost: CMG 250 Construction Estimating, CMG 306 Planning/Scheduling, CMG 430 Advanced Cost Estimating, CMG 400 Construction Accounting (long-term contract revenue)
- Law, safety and quality: CMG 310 Contracts & Law, CMG 350 Construction Safety (OSHA compliance), CMG 450 Codes & Quality Control
- Software: CMG 225 Computer Applications for Construction, CMG 330 Building Information Modeling (clash detection, constructability review)
- Business: MGT 207 Legal Environment & Ethics, MGT 315 Principles of Management, ETR 315 Entrepreneurship, plus one of MGT 433, MGT 450 or FIN 312
- Math and science: MTH 113 Pre-Calculus Trigonometry in the plan; MTH 125, PHY 213 and CHE 101/101L required for admission to the major
- Field and capstone: CMG 420 Internship, CMG 460 and CMG 461 Capstone I and II (2 credits each)
The balance is close to even: 11 management and business courses against 11 engineering, methods and systems courses, plus 2 software courses. The engineering block is the distinctive part. Statics, strength of materials, soils and structural design are typical of construction engineering, not of business-side CM degrees. The business block adds entrepreneurship and accounting, which suits students who plan to run a firm. More curriculum details are available here.
You Should Know
- ⚠️ The admission list requires MTH 125, which is Calculus I in Alabama’s common course numbering, but the four-year plan names only MTH 113 Pre-Calculus Trigonometry. Confirm where Calculus I fits before planning semesters.
- CMG 320 Leadership in Construction appears in the course descriptions but not in the four-year plan.
- The sophomore fall semester lists 17 credits but sums to 16 if PED/HED counts as 1 credit, which would make the plan 127 credits. Full-time flat-rate billing means the tuition estimate does not change.
- No concentrations or CM minor are listed.
B.S. Internship and Field Experience
- Required: CMG 420, 12 weeks in the construction industry, 3 credits
- Placement support: career fair and an on-campus interview week each semester
- Paid status: not clearly stated
- Employer partners: not named
- Capstone: two semesters (CMG 460/461), presented to faculty and industry professionals; no substitution allowed
- Student organizations: AGC, ABC, NAHB, ASCE, DBIA, Emerging Green Builders, Sigma Lambda Chi
A required 12-week placement plus a capstone judged partly by industry gives every graduate two documented employer-facing experiences. The interview week each semester means recruiting comes to campus, which matters for students without industry contacts. The program does not say whether internships are paid or name the firms that host them, so ask for recent placement lists.
B.S. Admissions
Admission to the major has a math-and-science gate: students must exit the Freshman Academy and finish four prerequisite courses first.
- Exit requirements of AAMU’s Freshman Academy
- Completion of EGC 101, MTH 125, PHY 213 and CHE 101/101L
- Residency: at least 25% of all credits and 50% of major coursework at AAMU
- Transfer students from Alabama community colleges: AGSC/STARS Area V guide (2026–2027 bulletin) allows up to 23 pre-professional hours, naming CMT 101, CMT 102, CMT 205, CMT 206, CMT 217, CDT 205, EGR 220, EGR 260, BUS 263 and MTH 113
You Should Know
- The 50% major-coursework residency rule caps how much construction coursework a transfer student can bring in, even under the STARS guide.
- Scholarships: several competitive full-tuition CM scholarships for incoming freshmen and transfers, plus the Birmingham Construction Industry Authority Scholarship. The college requires a 3.0 GPA to receive and keep any of its scholarships.
- AAMU sources disagree on the department chair: the bulletin and website list Dr. Aschalew Kassu (Interim), while the 2026–2027 STARS guide lists Dr. Mebougna Drabo.
Tuition
Alabama A&M charges $293 per credit in-state and $585 per credit out-of-state for Fall 2026, plus $881 per semester in mandatory fees at 10 or more credits. Full-time students taking 12–18 credits pay a flat rate equal to 15 credits of tuition plus fees.
| Item | In-State | Out-of-State |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition (15-credit flat rate) | $4,395 | $8,775 |
| Mandatory fees (IT, wellness, health, shuttle, debt service, dental, rec/athletic, activity) | $881 | $881 |
| Per semester, 12–18 credits | $5,276 | $9,656 |
| Program total (8 semesters, derived) | $42,208 | $77,248 |
Every semester in the four-year plan falls between 14 and 18 credits, so all eight bill at the flat rate. Spread across 128 credits, that averages about $330 per credit in-state and $604 out-of-state. See the official tuition and fees page.
Be aware that:
- Housing and meal plans are excluded from these totals.
- Follett Access course materials add $380 per full-time semester for 100- and 200-level courses unless students opt out by the deadline. Four lower-division semesters would add $1,520.
- International students pay a mandatory $1,014 health insurance fee.
- Credits above 18 bill at the per-credit rate on top of the flat rate.
- Late registration carries a $62 penalty.
- Rates are for Fall 2026; AAMU states fees can change without notice.
The flat rate rewards heavy loads. A student who takes 18 credits pays the same as one taking 12, so the published 14–18 credit plan is the cheapest way through. Falling below 12 credits in any term raises the cost per credit, and extending to a ninth semester adds a full $5,276 in-state.
Why Choose This Construction Management Program?
Best suited for students who want a construction management degree with real engineering mechanics, a required internship, and in-state public tuition in north Alabama.
Freshmen with strong math: The statics, strength of materials, soils and structural design sequence suits students drawn to heavy civil or structural work who do not want a full engineering degree. The math-and-science admission gate means students should arrive ready for calculus-level work.
Alabama community college transfers: The STARS guide gives a named route for CMT, surveying and engineering mechanics courses taken at a two-year college. The 50% major-residency rule still means most CMG coursework happens at AAMU.
Students who need ACCE accreditation: Students who plan to rely on ACCE status with employers or graduate programs should compare Auburn and Tuskegee, which appear on ACCE’s list. AAMU offers no CM master’s, so graduate study means another school or AAMU’s online Master of Engineering in Systems & Materiel Engineering, an engineering management degree rather than CM.
Accreditation and Credentials
Alabama A&M University is institutionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). That status supports federal financial aid eligibility and credit transfer.
The bulletin names ABET accreditation for the department’s civil and mechanical engineering degrees but names no accreditor for construction management. AAMU says its CM curriculum follows Associated Schools of Construction and Associated General Contractors guidelines. The program does not appear on ACCE’s baccalaureate list (Rev. 2024.03.13), which includes Auburn University and Tuskegee University in Alabama.
The degree embeds no industry certifications. CMG 350 covers OSHA compliance, and CMG 450 covers building codes and quality control, both relevant to field supervision. AAMU does not state any credit toward Alabama contractor licensing or AIC exam preparation.
