Program Pathways Overview

ProgramEst. TuitionEst. DurationCredit Hours
B.S.$34.3K in-state /

Tuition estimates use Cal Poly Pomona’s 2026-27 full-time semester tuition plus campus fees; out-of-state adds $471 per unit.

  • Why choose it: Cal Poly Pomona’s B.S. is accredited by two ABET commissions, one for engineering and one for construction management, and pairs estimating, scheduling, and contracts with structural analysis and reinforced concrete design.
  • Trade-off: BIM and risk management are electives competing for a single 3-unit slot, business coursework is limited to one project management and accounting course, and no internship is required.

B.S. in Construction Engineering and Management

The estimated tuition for the B.S. in Construction Engineering and Management at Cal Poly Pomona is approximately $34,264 in-state (122 credits at $280.85/credit, derived from 8 semesters at $4,282.97).

The program can generally be completed in about 4 years (8 semesters).

The B.S. in Construction Engineering and Management is a 95-unit major inside a 122-unit degree, offered by the Civil Engineering Department. It was renamed from Construction Engineering Technology in fall 2018 and has produced over 1,000 graduates since 1971, per Cal Poly Pomona. The out-of-state estimate is about $91,726.

B.S. Curriculum

The major follows a civil engineering core, with construction courses starting in the second year.

  • Construction management (9 courses, 26 units): CE 3101 Construction Engineering with lab, CE 3121 Building Systems, CE 3140 Construction Estimating with lab, CE 3150 Construction Equipment and Safety, CE 4120 Construction Scheduling with lab, CE 4130 Construction Contracts, CE 4140 Construction Project Management and Accounting, CE 4151 Project Life Cycle and Sustainability, and CE 2021 Infrastructure Economics and Public Policy.
  • Engineering analysis and design (7 courses, 21 units): CE 2041 Engineering Statics, CE 2051 Mechanics of Materials, CE 2061 Fluid Mechanics, CE 2030L Civil Engineering Materials Laboratory, CE 3401 Geotechnical Engineering with lab, CE 3501 Structural Analysis I with Structural Design Laboratory, and CE 4510 Structural Design: Reinforced Concrete.
  • Foundations (3 courses, 10 units): CE 1001 Civil Engineering and Design Drafting, CE 1011 Surveying Engineering, and EGR 1000 Engineering, Society, and You, each with a lab.
  • Senior design and professional practice (5 courses, 9 units): EGR 4810, 4820, and 4830 Project Design Principles and Applications, EGR 4050 Role of Design Professionals in Society, and IME 4020W Ethical Concepts in Technology and Applied Science.
  • Math and science (8 courses, 29 units): MAT 1140, 1150, and 2140 Calculus I-III, PHY 1510 Newtonian Mechanics and PHY 1520 Electromagnetism and Circuits with labs, CHM 1210 General Chemistry I with lab, GSC 3210 Engineering Geology I with lab, and IME 3011 Applications of Statistics in Engineering.
  • Major elective (3 units): one from construction risk management, BIM, temporary construction structures, project delivery methods, underground and trenchless construction, pavement design, geomatics, digital mapping, GIS, subdivision engineering, or an internship.

Cal Poly Pomona’s major reads closer to a civil engineering degree than most construction management programs: three semesters of calculus, fluid mechanics, structural analysis, and reinforced concrete design are required. The construction sequence covers estimating, scheduling, and contracts with hands-on labs, but BIM, risk, and delivery methods compete for one elective slot.

You Should Know
  • The department program page lists 124 semester units; the 2025-26 and 2026-27 catalogs list 122.
  • Several major courses (calculus, physics, chemistry, geology, ethics, and senior design) also count toward general education.
  • CE 4020 Civil Engineering Internship is 2 units, short of the 3-unit elective requirement on its own.
  • The catalog lists a 0-unit Sponsored Summer Experience (CPU 3003) under graduation requirements without stating whether it is mandatory.

B.S. Internship and Field Experience

  • Required: No; field experience comes through labs and the senior design sequence.
  • Optional: CE 4020 Civil Engineering Internship counts toward the major elective.
  • Labs: estimating, scheduling, construction engineering, surveying, geotechnical, materials, and structural design labs are required.
  • Hours, pay, and employer partners: Not clearly stated.

Pomona’s lab-heavy sequence gives students repeated hands-on practice, but jobsite time depends on summer work or the internship elective. The department cites its suburban Los Angeles-area location as a source of internship opportunities.

B.S. Admissions

Students choose the construction engineering and management option when applying through Cal State Apply.

  • Current students: can declare or change to the option with a general academic petition.
  • Math: the roadmap starts MAT 1140 Calculus I in the first semester.
  • Enrollment: a 2019 department document describes the program as impacted, so current admission criteria should be checked with Cal Poly Pomona.

Tuition

For 2026-27, Cal Poly Pomona charges full-time undergraduates $3,419 in tuition plus $863.97 in campus fees per semester, for $4,282.97. Nonresidents add $471 per unit.

Item (2026-27, per semester, 7+ units)Amount
Tuition$3,419.00
Campus fees$863.97
Total, in-state$4,282.97
Nonresident tuition+$471 per unit
  • B.S. estimate: 8 × $4,282.97 = $34,264 in-state (derived).
  • Out-of-state: $34,264 + 122 units × $471 ($57,462) = $91,726 (derived).

Be aware that:

  • The $2 Student Involvement and Representation Fee is optional and excluded from the total.
  • Cal Poly Pomona lists campus fees as one combined amount; the itemized breakdown is on a separate mandatory fee schedule.
  • CSU tuition has risen each year, so later years may cost more.
  • Housing, meals, books, and course materials are not included.

At about $34,300 in-state, Cal Poly Pomona sits between Cal State East Bay and Fresno State on price, and costs roughly half as much as Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. See Cal Poly Pomona’s 2026-27 tuition and fees.

Why Choose This Construction Management Program?

Cal Poly Pomona fits students who want construction management built on an engineering foundation, at Cal State prices in the Los Angeles area.

Choose Cal Poly Pomona if: you want structural, geotechnical, and concrete design alongside estimating and scheduling, or want the option of field engineer and project engineer roles on heavy civil and commercial projects. Its ABET engineering accreditation also sets it apart from the construction management programs profiled so far in California.

Look elsewhere if: three semesters of calculus is a barrier, or you want required BIM, business, and internship coursework. CSU Long Beach requires fieldwork, and Cal State East Bay requires BIM and building codes.

Accreditation and Credentials

California State Polytechnic University, Pomona is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission, which supports federal financial aid eligibility and credit transfer.

The 2025-26 catalog lists the B.S. in Construction Engineering and Management as accredited by ABET’s Engineering Accreditation Commission, under the program criteria for construction engineering, and by ABET’s Applied and Natural Science Accreditation Commission, under the program criteria for construction management. ABET’s directory could not be checked, so dates were not confirmed. The program does not appear on ACCE’s baccalaureate list (Rev. 2024.03.13).

The program embeds no industry certifications. Its predecessor, Construction Engineering Technology, held ABET Engineering Technology accreditation.
